Doing Nothing
I hear the eternal internal—infernal—refrain, that I’m not getting enough done and I know it’s true.
I have this daily commute and on it I do nothing. I barely even read tweets.
Thoughout the day, I fill in gaps with mindless productivity substitutes like check-ins and status updates and chats, who cares what.
I have developed a thickish skin on my psychic ear drum...

The Hundred Chat Jab (and the tweet that launched...
Yesterday, I shared what I thought was a particularly humorous tweet from @arthurascii, with a friend on the bus. The reference was slightly obscure, but the friend, (we'll call her TB) has a degree in history and is no dummy and... well, I thought she'd get it. She didn't and, apparently, she misspent some of the day concerned with it. What follows here is the resulting evening chat followup.
TB: I wrote "Plantagenet" on a post it + showed it to more than 30 people (including someone's lawyer boyfriend). Not a glimmer of recognition.
bp: Oooh, a lawyer! might as well have showed it to a sea lion.
TB: If it had only said "first house of Anjou", it all would have clicked. I just don't know those newfangled names. I'm an originalist.
bp: like Montague and Capulet.
TB: like Scalia.
What did that tweet say again? I want to laugh uproariously now that I studied up.
bp: well... here's going to be your trouble. hint: its a play on a phrase popularized by the tv character 'Hannibal'
TB: I need the tweet, verbatim.
bp: "Henry V : I love it when a Plantagenet comes together."
TB: I tried to google "Hannibal," but I don't even know what tv show u mean. I'm an originalist. We only watch reality tv.
bp: original tv show = the A-Team. George Peppard as Hannibal. closed nearly every show with the catch phrase "I love it when a plan comes together"
[ long pause ]
TB: I don't think that tweet is very interesting. In fact I think its stupid.
bp: it's genius. convergence of high and low brows. Plus you would probably have to have been watching american television in the early 80's...
TB: That guy probably only knows "Plantagenet" because he watches that sexed-up Henry the 8th show on HBO. He's a couch potato intellectual.
bp: It's on Showtime.
If you don't have both a high and low brow, or in the target age demo....then you prob won't get the tweet...
TB: Who tweeted this and where does he live? I am going to write him a letter, put a stamp on it, and mail it to him.
bp: ...it's a very useful, socially-contextual filter.
TB: It's a pun.
bp: true--genius.
RT @arthurascii: Henry V : I love it when a Plantagenet comes together.
